Basura
Andrew Lacon
11th - 28th June
PV Thursday 11th June 5-8pm
Basura brings togther a collection of new work by Andrew Lacon, following his time spent in Latin America.
Lacon has long been interested in material histories and the language of sculpture, considering how work can be experienced and disseminated, exploring relationships between national culture, social class and artistic intention.
Basura, spannish slang for waste or trash, draws a direct reference from his encounters and the materials or sculptural forms which have inspired his work. Vitrines or vessels are reoccurring tropes within Lacons work and here, he continues to question the relationship between display and sculpture, taking reference from the ubiquitous forms found in Latin America. Working from his own photographs, drawings and residency works, Lacon takes influence from everyday encounters; a bin, paving slabs, window grilles, architectural details.
Lacon is fascinated with Latin Americas embedded culture of including art into everyday life, from Pre-Hispanic architectural fascades in Mexcio to the commercial foyers of Buenos Aires offering a stark contrast to his experience of growing up in
the black country.
Lacons interest in thresholdsd can be seen in these new works,
where the interest between public and private and who and how people experience art, is played out through a new narrative, drawing parallels with british working class vernacular.
Use of materials which straddle, funcitoal construction and luxury. (Waste commercial marble of douglas fir which is used in construction but also Donald Judd in art context or design for Burberry store in Heathrow Airport)
